I've watched people do unspeakable things to each other in the name of quarterly earnings. I've also watched lives transformed beyond imagination — in workplaces where fairness, kindness and disciplined execution created the space for creativity to flourish. The difference between those two workplaces is what my working life has been about.

Thirty years inside complex operations — resetting multi-billion-dollar mining operations, building systems of work, training frontline teams, integrating mergers — has convinced me it all comes down to one thing: the gap between leading and managing, and the decisions that live in it. And the fix, I'm sorry to report to the consulting industry, is rarely a bold new initiative. It is the calm, methodical implementation of the basics: good systems of work, clear decision-making, and genuine clarity about what the work actually is.
